There is great debate when Overlanders discuss their preferred vehicles for undertaking adventures. Often there is great debate between foreign and domestic that seems to tear the Underlanding community apart vs bring things together. Luckily the experts at Underlanding.com have put together four reasons why a regular Chevy truck is the best choice for an Overlanding adventure.
- One – Capability
When adventurers are looking for a vehicle it needs to not only be capable off road but also tackle tasks such as towing trailers, hauling camping gear, and in it’s off time take a load of bricks or plywood to an overlander’s or their friends “non-movable home”. When it comes down to horsepower vs fuel economy a 2006 Chevy 2500 is tough to beat.
- Two – Maintenance and Repairability
Pull into any rural small town and there is typically a shadetree auto mechanic around. Roll in with a 2023 Toyota Tacoma with check engine lights he can call you a tow truck. That’s about it. With a small block chevy there isn’t any part that they can’t help you with. Let say you were out in the dunes and grenaded the whole engine. That mechanic and his cousin Larry can have swap a scrap yard black with 100K on the clock for less than $4,000. Good luck on even getting your check engine lights cleared for that price on anything else.
- Three – Durability
People will cite that other brands of trucks have hundreds of thousands of miles with never having have major repairs. They need to remember the brand that pioneered independent suspension on trucks. Take a look on the online marketplace. These used trucks will have hundreds of thousands of miles on them and still go to work for another 100k without much more work put into them.
- Four – Price
Despite what many journals on the overland topic will lead you to believe the majority of the community are using their daily or weekend rig to go out on their week vacation to Utah to camp and enjoy the trails. Current marketplace prices have a used 2010 Chevy 6.0 Extended cab pickup with 150k miles clocking in around $8,900 in good useable trail ready shape. Just add rubber of choice to the wheels. The used market for foreign branded pickups for that same price range is a 1996 underpowered, poor fuel economy, clapped out rust bucket. Skeptics will argue they can go down skinnier trails. Professionals will tell you, Full size is the only size for Underlanding.
Underlanding.com maintains that the best overlanding rig is the one you have.
You can bolt traction mats just as easily as any rig.
